What is immersion?

 

According to the dictionary, immersion is an absorbing involvement or the fact of  becoming completely involved in something.

 

In terms of language learning, it is the process of learning a language or skill by using nothing else but that language or skill.

 

Immersion-style language learning also means learning a language by surrounding yourself with it as much as possible, rather than mainly studying grammar rules or memorising vocabulary.

 

You learn the language the way children learn their first language — by hearing, using, and experiencing it in real situations.

 

 

Key features of immersion learning:

  • Constant exposure: You hear and see the language all the time (conversations, videos, reading, etc.)
  • Learning by doing: You speak and interact, even if you make mistakes
  • Real-life context: You learn words and phrases through situations, not just textbooks
  • Thinking in the language: Over time, you stop translating and start understanding directly

 

 

Examples:

  • Living in a country where the language is spoken

  • Attending classes taught only in the target language

  • Watching movies, listening to music, and speaking daily in that language

 

 

It works because it builds natural fluency, better pronunciation, faster understanding

 

 

In short, immersion learning is about using the language as a tool for communication, not just studying it as a subject.

 

 

 

How does it work?

 

IMMERSION  WORKSHOP

 

Immersion WORKSHOPS are between 1-5 days long. You spend your days only speaking the target language with your tutor and the other participants (if there are any).

 

You stay with your tutor in his/her home or if you stay in a hotel or a guest house, you simply spend the entire day with your tutor engaging in different activities. 

 

You spend between 5-8 hours a day with your tutor studying and practising the target language ‘immersively’ by engaging in various tasks and projects that you do together.

 

Since your tutor is a native (or native-like) speaker, you will ONLY be using the target language the entire time!
